Life as an Intern Manager

Justin | Intern Manager | Pennsylvania, US | 9/10/2023

Avalere Health runs an annual summer internship for students and recent graduates to gain experience serving life science commercialization. Justin, Account Director, reflects on his experience as an Intern Manager and how Avalere Health supports the needs and interests of every individual, from interns and new recruits to veteran team members.

What prompted you to pursue this opportunity?

I had internships in many different industries as early as my first year in college, so I know how crucial that time is. Internships give students a chance to learn from experienced individuals and figure out what their interests are. When I started at Avalere Health, I expressed my interest in working with interns to my manager, and she connected me to the right team who got the process started.

What were your key responsibilities as an Intern Manager in addition to your core role?

My job was to introduce the intern I managed to a client service role at Avalere Health but also to introduce them to as many people as I could within the network. Pushing them to build relationships with as many people as possible was a goal of mine during the 10-week program. My team members made it a priority to get to know all the interns and help mentor them.

What was most rewarding about the experience of mentoring an intern?

I love working with college students to help them figure out what their passions are. Whether they decide this is what they see themselves doing after college or decide it’s not for them, both outcomes are a win to me.

What were the key highlights of your time as an Intern Manager?

My favorite part of being a manager to young talent was watching the 4 interns in this cohort all work together on one project with one collective goal. Seeing them become friends over time and build their own networks was outstanding.

How would you describe the working environment at Avalere Health?

Working in a remote environment is challenging enough, but Avalere Health gives you the flexibility that many employees crave. They hone our strengths and build up our weaknesses. I always feel like I have complete control over my career and my time here at Avalere Health. If I have an interest, we are encouraged to pursue it. That goes for all employees, from full-time and freelance staff to interns.

Do you have any advice for future interns?

While it may be challenging in a remote environment, immerse yourself in as much as possible. Sit in as many meetings as possible, and ask as many questions as you can.

How do you manage a healthy work-life balance?

I set goals for myself every day. What must get done today, what’s nice to get done today, or what can wait until tomorrow. With that I’m able to prioritize my day and make sure that at the end of the day I can close my laptop and pick it back up tomorrow.

Do you have any advice for maintaining mental well-being whilst working from home?

With the flexibility that Avalere Health provides, you have the freedom to step away from your desk and take a break for lunch or go on a walk. The organization encourages us to take care of ourselves, and in doing so, makes our work more enjoyable.
