June 4, 2025
Dr. Namandjé N. Bumpus, Ph.D., who served as the Principal Deputy Commissioner for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until December 2024 has joined the Advisory team at Avalere Health. Dr. Bumpus will serve as a Strategic Advisor and subject matter expert on healthcare policies and scientific strategy.
“It is such a privilege to have Dr. Bumpus join our Advisory team,” said Sarah Alwardt, Ph.D., president of our Advisory group. “She will serve a critical role in providing strategic guidance to our growing list of clients in the life sciences, medical device, and public health markets.”
While serving in the number two role at the FDA, Dr. Bumpus oversaw the agency’s operations and worked closely with the Commissioner to develop and implement key public health initiatives. Prior to serving as the Principal Deputy Commissioner, she was the FDA Chief Scientist. Her areas of focus included regulatory science and science policy; implementation of the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act; advancing alternative methods to animal testing; clinical trial data reporting initiatives, internal and external scientific and regulatory appeals; FDA modernization, including the creation of a unified Human Foods Program, a new model for field operations; and overseeing policy for the regulation of cannabis-derived products, among other efforts.
“We are experiencing an unprecedented time of scientific innovation, yet this also lends itself to an increasingly complex product development and policy landscape,” added Dr. Bumpus. “With my knowledge and expertise, I hope to offer guidance in navigating these challenges effectively and capitalizing on opportunities to advance the mission of better health outcomes for every patient possible.”
Before joining the FDA, Dr. Bumpus was on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she served as the E.K. Marshall and Thomas H. Maren Professor and the Director of the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences.
Dr. Bumpus is the immediate past-president of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, a 4,000-member scientific society. She has been recognized with multiple awards embodying outstanding recognition and achievements. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
