Market access initiatives are relevant across the lifecycle of a new therapy. At the drug discovery phase, market access will consider what an ideal product looks like—this is called a target product profile or TPP.

At the clinical development stage, research and development teams are finding out if the new therapy works, but the market access teams are thinking about what the clinical trial program should look like to optimize chances of reimbursement.

Once the data show that the drug works and is tolerated, the market access team consider how best to communicate its value, to compel payers to fund treatment for appropriate patients.

As the drug becomes available on the market, the market access team predict and react to any changes in the environment, such as new competitors, policy changes, and new data. Where they can, they might renegotiate with payers to secure a better position in the treatment pathway and review financial decisions.
