Why great pharma creative is an act of alchemy

Jo Crouch, Head of Brand Strategy, Global Marketing, and Ian Ray, Executive Creative Director, Global Marketing | April 21, 2026

Memorable creative marketing doesn’t come from strategy or creativity alone, but from their fusion. It’s this alchemy that transforms insight into ideas powerful enough to earn trust and action, making the impossible possible for every patient.

Truly great advertising is felt, not seen. We’ve all had those experiences as consumers, where a brand campaign spotted in a second stays with you for years.

In pharma land, the rules are no different. In a regulated environment, “safe” can become the default pathway, which usually ends in the unmemorable. Yet these parameters do not have to blunt creativity. They can sharpen it.

Research across creativity and advertising has repeatedly shown that constraints can increase originality by forcing us to reach higher, rather than grab the first ideas on the lower shelves. We thrive when we are forced to think harder, and more exciting work emerges. But it takes bravery on both sides. And a willingness to shift conventions that no longer serve the patient, the brand, or the category.

Attention is rented. Impact is earned.

Pharma marketing often starts with facts: endpoints, curves, p-values, labels, mechanisms. But facts alone do not create belief, and belief is what changes behavior. People do not remember information; they remember what it means to them.

That is why an emotional response matters, not as a “nice to have”, but as a multiplier of effectiveness. Emotional creative drives stronger commercial outcomes over time. Brand-building and performance are not enemies; they’re partners, operating on different timescales.

In other words, if you want immediate action and lasting preference, you need to capture both head and heart. That can feel uncomfortable in a category built on evidence and regulation, but the answer isn’t to soften the science. It is to make the science matter in human terms, through a story that earns attention, builds trust, and leaves a lasting imprint.
