Applying patient preferences in treatment for triple negative breast cancer to value assessment

October 21, 2026

Situation

A top-15 pharmaceutical company sought Avalere Health’s support in understanding patient perspectives and preferences for treatment of triple negative breast cancer. Through primary research (e.g., interviews, patient surveys), we examined characteristics of treatment that patients value and applied these findings to the current US value assessment landscape to highlight where patient preferences are and are not incorporated in various value frameworks. HTA and value assessment approaches have historically not adequately incorporated patient preferences into their methodology. Consequently, elements of value that patients find particularly salient are often no t quantitatively or qualitatively included in the assessment of a treatment’s value.

Solution

Using triple negative breast cancer as a case study, we conducted primary research, ascertaining insights on how patients value care options. Through patient focus groups and a discrete choice experiment, we determined aspects of treatment that were most important to patients and analyzed to what extent these aspects are currently incorporated into value assessment.

Success

The results of this study were published in a white paper that highlights opportunities for methodological advancement for value assessment. The company’s policy team will utilize this analysis for targeted engagement with value assessment organizations to discuss how their assessments can be more patient-centered.
