Case Study
Comprehensive pre-launch planning for competitive novel vaccine
September 21, 2026
Situation
A multinational pharmaceutical manufacturer was preparing to launch a novel vaccine into a competitive market. To optimize its commercialization strategy, the organization needed to:
- Anticipate how the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) might assess the vaccine against a competing product.
- Understand the factors likely to shape the FDA label.
- Identify opportunities to secure reliable reimbursement at a premium price.
These uncertainties had important implications for the vaccine’s target product profile, evidence generation plan, launch timing, regulatory and ACIP engagement, and pricing strategy.
Solution
- We conducted an integrated program of primary and secondary market research, qualitative evidence assessment, quantitative conjoint analysis, and in-depth stakeholder interviews. A comprehensive benchmarking exercise characterized competitor pricing and launch trajectories, post-launch population coverage and growth, competitive product positioning, and the evolution of pricing and ACIP recommendations.
- We then evaluated the factors most likely to influence ACIP’s recommendations and identified opportunities to strengthen the client’s evidence package and engagement strategy. By modeling different target product profile, pricing, and recommendation scenarios, we assessed how potential ACIP decisions could affect vaccine utilization and market share.
- In parallel, we examined how the vaccine candidate could be perceived and assessed by the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. We identified opportunities to leverage data from completed and ongoing studies to support a differentiated, competitive product label.
Success
The engagement equipped the client with critical insights and actionable recommendations for launching its vaccine in a competitive environment. The organization was able to anticipate potential ACIP review scenarios and refine its target product profile, pricing strategy, and evidence-generation plan to improve the likelihood of favorable recommendation .
Our work also informed targeted ACIP and FDA engagement strategies, clarified opportunities to pursue a differentiated product label, and strengthened the client’s ability to forecast payer perceptions, mitigate launch risks, and position the vaccine for reliable reimbursement and commercial success.
